			Surgical

			Cataract and trauma surgery were greatly enhanced during my overseas appointments.

			Cataract and anterior segment surgery were my routine surgical interest initially using extra-capsular technique moving to small incision phacoemulsification with foldable lens implant (including phaco-trabeculectomies) in the mid 1990s.

			Complex muscle surgery

V.		Administrative and Professional Leadership Roles

	A.	Service Development	Upgrading general and special glaucoma clinical service in Stamford and Rutland Hospital, 1996.

			Diabetic Screening Programme (community based) programme 1992.

			Establishing multi-disciplinary steering group and liaising between the Department of Ophthalmology, general practitioners, multi-district optometrists and physicians (in diabetes) with the North Cheshire Health Authority. This followed a preliminary survey and planning very shortly after my appointment at Warrington.

			Establishing a special diabetic retinopathy service together with training responsibility for general practitioners and optometrist.

			Fluorescein Angiography Service and Clinic in Warrington 1992 -1996.

			Complex eye motility clinical and surgical service in Warrington 1992-1996.

			Jointly set up Ophthalmic Primary Care service in Warrington and Halton Trusts, 1993-1996 with lead responsibility for audit and scrutiny.

			Development of South Meirionnydd Peripheral Service as a major clinical out-patient service provider for the central regions of west Wales.

			Cataract Treatment Centre, North Wales (1990-1992) with in-depth audit to the Welsh Office.

			Establishing an Electro-diagnostic Service at St John's Ophthalmic Hospital, Jerusalem, training of local staff and setting new control standards.

	B.	Clinical Audit	Audit of the NWTC (N. Wales Treatment Centre), 1991-1997. The audit was submitted in 1997 and included a comprehensive analysis of the project, clinical data, and recommendations (click for details).

			Initiator and lead clinician of the departmental audit in Gwynedd and Warrington Hospitals, 1991-1995.

			Multi-district Audit on Primary Care Clinics 1993-1996 including drafting diabetic screening referral and audit protocols with Cheshire FHSA and the District General Practitioners Audit Committee.

	C.	Advisory Role and Studies	Ophthalmic Advisor to Community Public Health on Paediatrics and Paediatric Screening in Gwynedd.

			Upgrading of the fluorescein angiography service and appointment of an ophthalmic photographer in Warrington.

			To the Trust for upgrading the photography facilities and introducing digital imaging system, especially with the introduction of the diabetic screening programme at Warrington.

			To the Research and Development Directorate in Warrington and Halton as part of a bid for the funding of a new digital photography system.

			Paediatric visual screening programme for Gwynedd District, including recommendations for a revised protocol on paediatric screening in Gwynedd and guidelines on the optician's involvement in paediatric refraction. (1991-1992) in collaboration with the Consultant in Community Medicine, orthoptists and health visitors

			Recommendations for a Policy on Strategic Health Gains for Gwynedd, 1992.

			Recommendations to the Stanley Report on the future of ophthalmic services for North Wales supporting the need for an amalgamated ophthalmic centre for North Wales (Gwynedd and Clwyd) 1991-1992.

			Recommendations on development of the Paediatric Ophthalmology Service within the Peterborough NHS Trust 1996.

VII		Teaching and Training	In addition to my standard commitment to teaching and training my residents and nurses in the regular sessions and teaching days, I was also involved in talks on a variety of subjects to GPs, physicians for MRCP and FRCS candidates, optometrists (including seminars) and various community groups and societies. In addition to this I was responsible for teaching ocular trauma for casualty officers.
